3 May 2002: Toyota's new Camry has won a most unusual award - it is America's 'Most Washable Car'. The award is given by the International Carwash Association and the Camry won because it slips easily through car wash machines.
Its aerodynamic design resists catching and retaining dirt, and the car gained points for securely fastened mirrors, bumpers and wipers, retractable exterior mirrors and rear 'screen wipers and snug-fitting mouldings.
According to a company spokesperson, Toyota had in fact revised the design of one of the Camry's door rails to improve washability. "The rail was sharp and hands and towels were being cut, so we made sure the metal was smooth," she said.
