Upcoming Premio hints at next Avensis

4 October 2001: Toyota's new Premio, to be launched in Japan at the end of the year, is likely to give us clear clues to the shape and specification of the next Avensis.

The car is larger all around, with an extended wheelbase and increased inside room and height. Included in the innovations are reclining rear seats.

Elements of the shape of Toyota's eco-car Prius are evident in some of the pressings, and there are distinctive 'cylindrical' lights and a spoiler-like boot lid.

The Premio, and so any Avensis derivative, is likely to be powered by 1.5-, 1.8- and 2-litre VVT-i units. In Japan, a CVT automatic transmission will be available for the 2-litre. DD/BB
