Toyota posts record profits

30 October 2002: Toyota has announced record profits for the past six months and raised its profits outlook for the full year, thanks to better than expected business in the United States and Europe, and due partly to the new Camry (above).

The world's third-largest carmaker, said group operating profit surged 44 per cent for April-September to $5.94 billion.

Toyota predicted the robust performance would continue in North America, raising its sales forecast in the region by 30,000 vehicles to 1.97 million.

Sales rose 15 per cent thanks to the popularity of the remodelled Camry sedan and the Highlander sports utility vehicle in the United States. The company says it can reach sales of 800,000 units in Europe earlier than the 2005 target.
