Minister was speeding up of penalty points system

18 June 2002: Transport minister Seamus Brennan has ordered a speeding up of the implementation of the penalty points system for bad driving.

The new minister says projections that the system will take up to another nine months to bring in are ‘unacceptable’ and he wants it introduced by September.

The delays so far have been because of difficulties in synchronising computer systems in different relevant government departments and the gardai’s systems.
