Urea solution for diesel NOx

22 March 2004: Mercedes-Benz and Ford are looking at using urea injection as a means of beating US nitrogen oxide emissions requirements for their diesel technology.

It may be the only way that diesel cars from Europe will finally crack the stringent legislation due for 2007.

The ammonia-based fluid is held in a replaceable canister on the car injected periodically into the exhaust system. In high heat, urea neutralises NOx.
