SIMI collecting VRT views

08 September 2004: The motor industry umbrella body here, SIMI, is collecting views of motorists on the VRT taxation system, in line with a request from the European Commissioner for the Internal Market.

People who want to let the Commission know their views on this tax can complete the questionnaire on
http://www.simi.ie/tax_intro.asp.

“The Irish Government have doggedly held on to a car purchase tax even though excise duty on cars was abolished as far back as 1992,” says Cyril McHugh, Chief Executive, SIMI.  “It is clear that without action at a European level we in Ireland will be subjected to this penal tax indefinitely.”

SIMI is advising motorists to urge the European Commission to introduce proposals to abolish VRT.
