12 April 2003: Volkswagen has suffered a significant customer loyalty blow in North America, over a big failure rate in ignition coils used in its turbocharged 1.8-litre engines.
The problem relates to VW and Audi cars sold there in 2001 and 2002, most particularly in states which have cold winters. A voluntary recall undertaken by the company earlier this year has been hampered by a shortage of new, improved coils to replace the dodgy ones.
The country's 800-plus dealers were forced to replace only burnt-out coils instead of all the coils in a car brought in. Now, though, VW of America says it has enough of the units - which deliver power to the spark plugs - to effect full replacements.
But a number of disgruntled owners are already saying they'll not buy another VW, which is a serious consideration where the brand had an iconic reputation for reliability.
