New Polo launched in Ireland

15 February 2002: The new VW Polo has arrived in Ireland. Available in 3- and 5-door formats, the car has power options of a pair of 1.2-litre 3-cylinder and a 1.4-litre 4-cylinder petrol, as well as a normally-aspirated 1.9-litre diesel and a 1.4-litre turbodiesel.

Prices range between 14,120-18,310 euros. Standard specifications include front and side airbags, electrohydraulic power steering, drawers under front seats and split folding rear seats.

Options begin with a switch to turn off the passenger airbag and go on to include automatic transmission and ABS. Trendline and Comfortline specification packages are also available.

The new car is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, and there is significantly improved interior space, especially for rear passengers.

At yesterday’s launch, VW brand manager Tom O’Connor pointed out that the entry-level new Polo was some 200 euros cheaper than a similarly-equipped version of the runout model.

Importers MDL expect to sell some 7,000 new Polos in a full year.
