VW 'may let Phaeton die'

30 July 2003: Volkswagen may let its Phaeton luxury car 'die slowly' following disappointing sales results for its flagship, and the company is considering a new above-Passat car aimed directly at BMW's 5-Series.

In a report in Automotive News, VW insiders are quoted saying the next-generation Passat due in 2004 will give some of the design cues to be used in what is currently dubbed the 'C1' project.

The C1 is now slated for production in 2006, according to the report.

the Phaeton only sold around 2,000 Phaetons in the first half of this year, and a high-end W12 Passat has also bombed, reaching only have of its projected sales for last year.
