VW's first SUV debuts in autumn

13 May 2002: VW is getting into the luxury SUV business for the first time with this Touareg, which will be powered by either a 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine or the optional V10 5-litre turbodiesel.

There will also be versions produced under the Porsche and Audi brands.

The Touareg will debut in Europe in the autumn, and will be introduced in the US late next year with a 4.2-litre V8 petrol instead of the diesel. It will arrive in Ireland in the middle of next year.
