18 September 2003: The new Volkswagen Transporter series has been launched on the Irish market, celebrating the fifth generation of the vehicle first introduced in March 1950.
There are four engines available in the range to be marketed here: a 1.9 litre TDI version developing 85 bhp and 105 bhp and linked to a 5-speed manual gearbox, and a 2.5 litre TDI version developing 130 bhp and 174 bhp linked to a 6-speed gearbox. All four engines feature VWs Pumpe Deuse diesel injection technology. The 2.5 litre engines are also available with 4-Motion, Volkswagens acclaimed four wheel drive system which replaces the syncro four wheel drive system available in the previous model.
In panel van format, the new Transporter range consists of short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase versions in a choice of roof heights standard and medium/high (short-wheelbase) and standard, medium/high and high-roof (long-wheelbase). Pick-up versions in short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase form are also available across the engine range as are short-wheelbase and long-wheelbase chassis cabs. A long-wheelbase double-cab pick-up completes the model line-up.
Two models are available here initially both in short-wheelbase versions: the 1.9 litre/85 bhp TDI at E21,535 (ex works) and the 1.9 litre/105 bhp TDI at E23,350 (ex works). These will be followed shortly by long-wheelbase versions at E22,400 (85 bhp) and E24,215 (105 bhp).
It is expected that the full range of models will be available by Spring 2004. Included amongst them will be a new Transporter Shuttle (replacing the current Caravelle) in 8 and 9-seater versions with short/long-wheelbase options plus a new 7-seater luxury people carrier available from 1.9 litre/105 bhp up with standard features that include twin sliding doors and air conditioning (to which the familiar Caravelle name will be given).
