Prepare for winter motoring

10 December 2001: Once a year servicing for modern cars and vans is now commonplace, reflecting the improvement in product reliability levels achieved by most vehicle manufacturers.

But RAC breakdown statistics show that the top 10 list of most common call-out faults last year was again dominated by battery and tyre problems, and if you own a car that's three years old or more, you should give it a winter check of safety critical components, including tyres, exhaust, battery, brakes, suspension, steering and clutch.

Your car manufacturer may well have a scheme for such a winter check. But any reputable motor service outlet will be able to help. Prices are usually set as a menu, so you know in advance.

And anyway, the few euros spent now is well worth the peace of mind.
