US drivers complain about xenons

22 April 2003: There's a consumer resistence building in the US over the introduction of xenon lights, which have become quite common on European cars. So far in America, only about 1 per cent of cars are sold with the extra cost option.

In a survey carried out by the National Highway and Transport Safety Agency, some 30 per cent of 5,000 written comments have been from people complaining about the glare from the lamps, which are mainly a luxury car option.

But the bluish tinge is getting considered to be sexy, and as a cheap variation, some drivers are buying tinted plastic covers for their existing lights, which do nothing to improve the vision.

And, according to claims by Consumer Reports Magazine, tests have suggested that cheaper halogen lights actually do a better job, without the glare.

The NHTSA may soon issue regulations about the lights.
